Sea Otter Classic Family Ride Out

April 30, 2026 by mhenderson

  • Client: Kids Ride Shotgun
  • Event: Sea Otter Classic 2026, Monterey, CA
  • Scope: Event videography, short-form social content, hero recap video

Kids Ride Shotgun is a global mountain biking brand focused on getting families riding together. Their flagship product is a kids seat that lets kids from 9 months to 7 years ride on a bike with an adult. For the 2026 Sea Otter Classic, they hosted a large-scale Family Ride Out with over 100 participating families on the outdoor demo course.

I was on the ground (and on an e-bike) riding alongside families to capture close-up, cinematic footage of kids and parents sharing the trail together. The goal was a mix of epic slow-motion moments and candid energy that reflected the brand's spirit: fun, chaotic, and full of joy.

My son, Bowie Henderson, joined as Production Assistant and second shooter, capturing gimbal footage of ride participants from the course while I rode alongside families to get up-close coverage. The two-camera approach gave us a deep library of angles and perspectives to pull from in the edit. Given the hectic nature of shooting at a sporting event and trade show, dealing with families and young kids, and the necessity that I move between multiple shooting locations by bike, I wouldn't have been able to capture such a complete set of shots without his help. He was able to capture the start and finish as well as run out onto the course to shoot families riding on the trails. He's a great young shooter and we make a great team!

After the ride, I grabbed interview soundbites with Kids Ride Shotgun CEO Dan and event participants, which became the narrative backbone of the hero recap and social cuts. Ambassador-captured action cam and 360 cam footage was integrated into the final edits for additional variety and perspective.

Deliverables included a quick-turn 1 minute social edit (delivered the night of the event), a 1 minute hero recap video, and multiple short-form social cuts optimized for Instagram Reels, TikTok, and YouTube Shorts delivered in 9x16 and 1x1 for various platforms and advertising formats. The content is currently being used across Kids Ride Shotgun's social channels and in paid advertising.

"Mike did an awesome job providing videography for our MTB ride out at Sea Otter Classic. With short notice, limited reconnaissance and working with the extra complexity of kids, he pulled together some epic action sports footage of the event and edited a top notch hero and social cuts. Highly collaborative and flexible, would definitely recommend him!"
